Skip Wreck

Skip Wreck takes to the sea’s!

Last week our sister company Canvey Skip Hire & Recycling Ltd, took part in the very first Canvey Island Rotary Club charity raft race.

Our raft was made entirely from Skip waste!

Our chosen charity was BOPH (Business opportunities for the physically handicapped) who are based next door to our Canvey Island waste transfer station.

What a blast we had, it was great fun for everyone involved. Our staff and their families came to cheer us on.

We had been planning the build of our raft for 3 weeks, it was a real team building opportunity for our staff.  The weather was kind to us on the day of the race, but the water was still rather cold!  It was a fantastic turnout, with lots of local families coming to watch the event.

Our raft was made entirely from materials found in skips and put together by our yard staff, We used diesel drums, pallets, rope, cable ties and chipboard to build the main frame.

We decided on a beach theme.  Other items we used that were found in our skips included: flip flops, plastic bucket and spade, a plant and plant pot, metal deck chair and parasol, plastic plates and bowls.

We could not believe that we also managed to find 4 oars, a snow shovel (used as an oar) and even a life jacket!

We aptly named our raft “Skip Wreck”  we had a 5 man crew, all staff members from our 3 businesses, Canvey Skip Hire & Recycling Ltd, Canvey Cash 4 Clothes Ltd and Findaskip Ltd.

We started off well, but soon realised it was going to be hard work to keep up the pace, we lost the plant pot before we got to the first marker, but other than that our raft remained in tact!

We had some tough opposition, from other local companies and charities form Canvey and Benfleet.

Indee’s Band of Brothers won the race with their very impressive raft, they walked away with the £250 prize fund for their chosen charity “The Indee Rose Trust”  We hope to beat them next year, we are already planning our next raft “Skip Wreck 2”!
