Skip Sizes – Which skip size will I need?

Skip Sizes

When hiring a skip it can be difficult to know which of the many skip sizes you will need, how long you will need it for a and how much waste you are likely to end up with. FindaSkip are here to help!

Skip sizes begin at the smallest 2 yard and go all the way up to the largest 40 yard roll on off containers.  Obviously, the larger the skip the more it will cost, but don’t be tempted to hire smaller than required, in the long run, it will always cost more to buy a second skip than to hire one larger skip. If you end up with extra space in the skip it’s easier to find waste to fill it rather than try and fit all the waste into a smaller skip.  You could also end up with an overload charge if you pile items up higher than the side of the skip, and you may be asked to level it before it can be taken away.

Remember that the skip sizes refer to how much they will hold, for example, a 6 yard skip will hold 6 cubic yards of waste.

Here is a simple guide to the skip sizes available and what they are best used for!

  • 2 yard skip (mini skip)  – These are the smallest skips available and will hold 20-25 bin bags of waste, or around 9 builders wheel barrows of soil or hardcore.
  • 3/4 yard skips (midi skips) – These skip sizes are good for small clearances, bathroom and kitchen refits  and can be filled with soil and hardcore.  They will hold around 30-40 bin bags of waste, and will take around 18 wheel barrow loads of soil.
  • 6 yard skip (small builders skip) – These are good for larger clearances and home and garden renovations. These are very popular as they will take large bulky items such as furniture as well as heavy materials such as soil and hardcore. They will hold around 50-60 bin bags of waste, or 27 wheel barrow loads of soil.
  • 8 yard skip (large builders skip) – The 8 yard skip is the largest skip available for heavy materials such as soil and hardcore. It is also good for large clearouts and commercial jobs.  They will hold 60-70 bin bags and around 36 wheel barrows of soil/hardcore.
  • 12 yard skip (maxi skip) – These must only be used for light waste such as furniture or wood.  They are good for shop refits and large house clearances.  They will hold around 100 bin bags of waste or 54 wheel barrow loads (but remember these cannot be used for soil or hardcore).
  • 14 yard skip (maxi skip) – These are similar to the 12 yard skips, but will take 100-120 bin bags and around 63 wheel barrow loads.
  • 16 yard skip (maxi skip) – As with the 12 and 14 yards, these must only be used for light bulky items. They will hold 120-140 bin bags of waste and 72 barrow loads.
  • 20 yard (Roll on/off container) – These are generally only used for commercial purposes, such as warehouse clearances or large demolition projects. They are good if you have lots of heavy waste that will mean having to hire multiple 8 yard skips. They can take around 200 bin bags of waste, and as much as 90 wheel barrow loads of soil.
  • 40 yard (Roll on/off container) –  Good for very large commercial projects, must be used for light waste only.  These will hold around 400 bin bags of waste, and around 180 builders barrow loads.
